Chic Pencil Cups

I came across the photo of Peter Som in his office above and thought it was very clever that he had used old Diptyque candle jars to hold his colored pencils. Then I saw he photo of Alexander Wang's New York apartment in the February issue of Domino and on his desk was an old Diptyque candle jar holding pens and scissors. Do all fashion designers think alike? Regardless, it's a fun way to reuse something that would otherwise be thrown away. Just clean out the old wax first so you don't ruin your pencils by freezing the jar or soaking it in hot water. Then enjoy your chic new pencil cup!

I bought those Slatkin Kaballah candles just so that I could use the empty red vessel as a pencil holder! They also look good when used as little vases too.

Bonjour Habitually Chic,

Am discovering your lovely, very interesting blog for a French girl like me living in the South of spain who likes design. I also happen to be a small scale designer.

You say you intend to go to Paris in April and visit Dries Van Noten shop. I thought you might like to have addresses of other nice places to go. I lived in Paris for many years. I'll send you an email A bientôt !

I use an old Diptyque candle jar (the green one) for my make-up brushes. Très chic :)

Great blog

Peak, I'll have to check those candles out. The Tory Burch store uses the orange candle jars for pens too. I love those ones. I think it works better with the ones without a label so I was surprised to see people using those ones as well.

I always keep old candle jars for the same thing, pencils, make-up brushes and pots for orchids. I find it hard to throw them away...

Suzy, I have a bunch of candles that are near the end that I have saved up in a cabinet. I think I have found a great weekend project for myself!

Alice, I think the magazine said that the photo wall was made up from polaroids of his models for his shows. I'll have to double-check that since I don't know how they were able to enlarge them.

I've saved the jars from candles for years -i can't bear to throw them away -most are so pretty. I save them and use them as pencil jars and other storage uses -but the BEST use for them is as a vase with flowers as a hostess gift. It's a cheap and thoughtful gift because the flowers are arranged by yourself and you don't have to bother the hostess with having to cut and find a vase for the flowers you give her! To dress it up sometimes I tie a ribbon around the glass.

Be the Change, that's a great idea. CZ Guest had a great candle design that looked like a flower pot and in the box, she included seeds so you could plant them after the candle was gone. I wonder if they still make them. They smelled great and were so pretty.

Richie, it looks even better in the magazine than in my terrible scan. I think you will like the rest of his apartment as well!

Diana Vreeland famously used a Rigaud box as a pencil cup. It always goes back to her, doesn't it?
