New Year, New You!

Right about now, you might be feeling like something the cat dragged in but it's the perfect time to take stock of 2007 and what you want to accomplish in 2008. For me, 2007 wasn't the worst year but it certainly wasn't the best. On the positive, I started my blog and met many amazing people. On the negative, I dated some not so great guys.

So here are my New Year's Resolutions:

  1. I resolve to date better in 2008. How I managed to date two men with serious drinking problems last year is beyond me but that won't happen again. Oh, and to the one I know who still reads my blog, I have one word for you...karma. And you better hope I don't run into you in the grocery store ever again because I might just run you over with my cart next time.
  2. I resolve to cut back on the diet coke in 2008. I don't do drugs or smoke so in the scheme of things, if diet coke is my worst vice, I think I'm doing okay but I know I should cut back a little.
  3. I resolve to go out more in 2008. I do a lot in New York but when you live alone, it's easy to loose motivation to go out sometimes. This year, I will not let myself get sucked into watching reruns of The Hills when I can be out doing something fantastic!
  4. I resolve to go to yoga more in 2008. I love yoga but I hate my gym so this year, I'm going to cancel my gym membership and find a yoga studio near my apartment so I have no excuse not to go when it's cold and rainy.
  5. I resolve to take a class in 2008. I always say I'm going to do this but never do so this year I will try to take a refresher course in French, finally learn CAD and how to make jewelry. Oh, and maybe a watercolor class too but that might be pushing it.
  6. I resolve to get my tear sheets organized in 2008. I have a million tear sheets sitting in cute little boxes under my couch and bed but when I can never find an article when I go to look for it so I will definitely need to come up with a new system.
  7. I resolve to cut back on the shopping in 2008. I already have a closet stuffed with clothes I don't wear so I'm going to clean it out and sell what I can on eBay and stop buying things I don't need. Good thing I bought those super on sale Christian Louboutin flats at Barney's yesterday when it was still 2007 ;-)
  8. I resolve to finish one book before buying another in 2008. This is probably my worst vice. I am always in the middle of at least two books at once and sometimes I never end up finishing them but this needs to stop. I also need to get rid of some books because I'm running out of space for them! But I did make room for one more, Write It Down, Make It Happen, and you should too!

In addition to making resolutions this year, I'm going to take a page out of Patricia Gray's book and write down what I want to happen in 2008. So here goes...

  1. I will find a new job in 2008. I think you already know this one but it's my number one goal for the new year. I've had a few people approach me but now I plan to contact everyone I know and start networking like there's no tomorrow. I know that I will find something this year whether it's working for a great designer or a magazine because I am going to make it happen!
  2. I will find a new boyfriend in 2008. There has got to be one normal single man in New York who appreciates art and design and who isn't gay and I know this is the year I will find him! If anyone knows any who are in the 30-40 year old range, feel free to send them my way! I'm currently accepting applications.
  3. I will spend my birthday in Paris in 2008. This was my plan last year but that never ended up happening so even if I have to go by myself, I'm going. But perhaps my new boyfriend would want to spend a long weekend in Paris this April. Or maybe I should organize a blogger weekend away. If anyone wants to go to Paris, let me know.
  4. I will move downtown in 2008. I really have to stop talking about how much I want to live in the West Village and just do it. Maybe my new job will pay me enough to afford the rent or I'll find a reasonably priced place. Whatever the case, I want to leave the Upper East Side, if for no other reason that to stop running into that wanker in Gristedes.
  5. I will be really happy in 2008! I know it's going to be the best year ever!

Happy New Year - having a set of goals helps you to look forward to the new year. I need to make a list of my own now. Keep up the great work on your blog - I look forward to reading more in 2008!

I hope you find a non-alcoholic boy friend. Enjoy your blog.

how funny- we really are in sync! amazing how so many of our resolutions are identical- especially the whole patricia gray/write it down thing! btw, i already gave up diet coke at the beginning of 2007 for health reasons, so you can do it! (at least try to only drink it with splenda, not aspartame. the info out there on aspartame, even if only partially true, is frightening).

and i have a feeling that you will never run into the alcoholic ex at the grocery store ever again. if he has even a shred of dignity after reading your post, he'll switch grocery stores, or get them online, or just survive on beef jerky and candy from the liquor store he frequents!

2008 is going to be great, chic! see you in paris!

#6 tear sheets - - I just did this today. binders with crazy-cute paper I slipped into the see-through covers and then I used those plastic slip-through-the-top sleeves. Magic. I feel soooo organized. You will too.

Paris - I'll go. I booked a trip year before last and landed on my 30th birthday. Best money I have ever spend.

Yoga... goo for you! My ass is as big as a house, and I also hate the gym, so it's pilates for me.

We have *many* of the same resolutions, so maybe we need to check in with each other to stay on track.

good luck & happy new year!

If you decide to unload your excess on eBay, be sure to let us know. I'm sure even your castoffs are awesome.

Hi Sam, I just heard that writing resolutions down does help you keep them. Here's hoping that happens. Happy New Year!

Habitually Chic said...

Thanks Dana! I hope so too!

Thanks Maison21! I think you, me and Decorno should plan our trip now ;-) I'll keep you posted on the diet coke cut-back.

Habitually Chic said...

Decorno, I did manage to do some organizing today but I think the tear sheets are going to require a very cold and rainy Sunday to make me stay in and focus on them. I wish I could organize them in binders but I don't have any room for them. I'm thinking I might organize them by magazine in those plastic envelopes. Best idea I can come up with now.

You are most certainly invited to Paris. I can imagine going with you and laughing the entire time. I'm gonna make Maison21 come with us too ;-)

I hope we can both keep our resolutions in this glorious new year!

Mamacita, I thought about posting about my eBay listings before but then I thought it would be weird. I'll have to reconsider. I do have a size 7 pair of suede Christian Louboutin wedges that I never wear. I may have to let Decorno know first though since she and I wear the same size ;-)

Happy New Year!

chic- go to my blog, and click "get your own" on my ebay widget, put it on your blog and start posting your louboutins on ebay today! nothing weird about it- if i was a chick, i'd want to buy your old clothes when you were done with them! i have a fashionista girlfriend that routinely sells her unwanted designer and makes some nice change sometimes. oh wait, that's me, with furniture, not clothes...

seriously, you'll be halfway to making rent on your fab west village apartment in no time at all...

check out ebay seller "stellamariestar"- my fashionista friend (a real girl, not me :).

Chic - those bad boys never, never get better. Trust me. It takes a little while to get used to "nice," but it's worth it. You are doing so great already - more good things will come to pass.

Awww, I LOVE your resolutions! Best of luck in '08; we all need it! :)

I'm with you on resolution 7 and 8. Mind you, you can easily justify more 'acquisitions' if you classify them as investments. It's not shopping, it's building a diversified portfolio.

All the best for 2008 and looking forward to more from your blog!

I love your resolutions and so many of us have piles of tearsheets!!!! If you figure out a good way to organize them please advise us all. Keep up the inspiring writing in 2008. Looking forward to the new year.

I am so glad to find your blog! I had a blast reading it. Can't wait for future posts. And regarding your 2008 resolution...hee hee...good luck on numbers 7 & 8. I seem to make the same two resolutions every year, but every year I'm left wondering where my savings had gone to...

Good year to lose bad habits! i think diet coke has some additive cause you never see someone drink just one...as for the drunks, good riddance! it seems like when you travel you meet great guys, like in Paris! I'll be there in May, when's your birthday?
Happiest Newest Year Ever!!!

Maison21, I will have to think about posting my ebay wares. I think it's different for you though because you are selling furniture and not some shoes you wore once.

BA, I hope you have a fabulous 2008 as well! I know good things are in stroe for you!

Hi Patricia, thanks for the book recommendation! You seem to have inspired a lot of people with it. Happy 2008!

Mrs. Blandings, I should have listened to your advice the first time and not talked to him again but I think I have finally learned my lesson. I've already planned a few dates with some nice guys too!

Thanks Me, Myself and I! Happy New Year to you too!

Richie Designs, I really wanted to be in Paris for my birthday but someone else will be there in May too so maybe we should plan a blogger trip for May. I'll email you!

Alice, I honestly think resolution #8 will be harder than #7. I'm a sucker for a good book! Happy New Year! Hope you have a great year. I'm still determined to get you a show for your photography!

Habitually Chic said...

A Design Affair, tear sheets are the bane of my existence. I might start scanning more so I can easily search for them but I think I might also organize them into plastic envelopes by magazine since I am more likely to remember where I saw something. I was also thinking about typing up a list of what's in each plastic envelope so I can easily find something. That is an ambitious plan that will probably take all year to impliment though!

Habitually Chic said...

Jenlaceda, Books are my weakness more than clothes lately. Happy New Year!

Habitually Chic said...

All Things Bright and Beautiful, glad I could give you a laugh. I'd rather laugh about it then waste my time crying. I already some some dates lined up so fingers crossed that they can handle their liquor! Happy 2008!

Habitually Chic said...

Paris Apartment, My birthday is April 18th but someone else wants to go in May too so maybe we plan a blogger convention! Let me know your plan. And Happy New Year! I just know this is going to be a good one!

Suzy said...

You can do it! - all that is! And yes, please do give up Diet Coke, I recently saw a documentary about preservatives and other nasties in our food and it really is scary stuff. I don't think splenda is any better though....sorry Maison 21! Good luck, and best wishes for the year ahead!

Move to the West Village! I lived there for almost 3 years (above Gray Dog's)and it was well worth every penny even though I could have had a nice down payment on a house elsewhere. Unfortunatly I moved to Midtown for space - which I highly DO NOT recommend so I'm moving back down once the lease is up. It's just too beautiful...
