Let's Revisit Miles Redd

I'm heading out early today to the D&D Building to participate in the panel discussion, The Evolution of Design, at 9:00am so I thought I should you something to look at while I am away. I've been thinking about this apartment that Miles Redd decorated and thought it would be fun to revisit it. House Beautiful published it in the July 2009 issue but as I've mentioned before, I love to see the photos outside of the magazine and laid out as they would be in the apartment. Then you can get a sense of the flow and how the colors move throughout the space. The colors are fantastic and the lacquered walls in the living room are to die for.

Elle Decor asked a few women designers in the November 2009 issue questions including how they would advise someone starting out in the business. Charlotte Moss and Kelly Wearstler had similar responses while included among other things, train your eye by reading magazines, looking at books, going to museums, and traveling. I would like to suggest studying the work of designers you admire as well. Then ask yourself why do you like their work? What did they do that you would never have thought of? What colors did they mix the room or house? How did they arrange the furniture? As I've heard from my readers, a lot of them want to work in design but might not have the funds to go to school right now but there is a lot you can learn on your own for free from top designers!

So I leave you with this gorgeous apartment to ponder and peruse while I away all day. Please behave yourself and don't break anything. I don't want to have to come back and ground you! See you later!

I would never in my life consider a red closet, however those suits stand out amazingly against the red.

i love all the use of different fabrics, especially the chair covered in ikat which i really don't usually like, but could warm up to in the way it's used here. just what you're talking about - the presentation of ideas in a new way that you never would have thought of.

I am beyond in love with this apartment and Miles Redd in general. I think this was the apartment of a gay couple? Anyway, its masculine, sexy and glamorous all at once. Miles Redd has a way of making his projects come alive in a vibrant and modern way, though he uses tons of antiques. I DIE!

Hello,

I follow your blog already a long time, even before i had my own :-)

Always fantastic, i discovered Miles Redd through the New York Social Diary, and i like his style a lot. It can't be discribed, but i find that something positive.

Thanks for sharing.

This was one of my alltime favorite spreads, I LOVE the bright green laqour (why am I such a terrible speller??) juxtaposed with the more traditional wall paper. Thanks for filling in the blanks!!

Adore the chinoiserie and light-hearted Art! But I don't know if I could cope with that much vivid green.

We remember this apartment, but don't recall seeing all these photos! How could we forget those gorgeous green leather-bound doors. Gotta say, didn't love the green kitchen so much. Understood the concept, but might have liked it in a different color--possibly even a different green.

Nice post!

I love this place too - Miles Redd uses lacquered walls to perfection. Stunning colour. Oh, and the faux-bone in the bedroom - genius!

I'm in love with the apartment, and what a treat since my subscription to House Beautiful has lapsed (I'll have to get right on that!)
And that kitchen...Wow! This type of bold move is what design is all about!
Thanks again

Miles is so great! I met him years ago when he worked at John Rosselli! He made me a catalogue and said it was the first and only! I live in California. I still have it! He is so nice, too!!!

Wow! The red closet is off the charts beautiful!
