Graceful Sailing

I don't know if I am going to look as chic as Grace Kelly on my cruise but I sure am going to try!  On April 4, 1956, Grace along with 50 members of her family, friends and bridesmaids, 84 pieces of luggage, and her poodle boarded the SS Constitution on route to France and her new life as a princess. She was seen off by thousands including hundreds of members of the press.  The trip across the Atlantic took eight days and she passed the time playing charades, shuffleboard and walking her dogs on deck. When they arrived in Monaco, the ship had to anchor just outside of the harbor and Prince Rainier's yacht the “Avante II” was sent out to the ship to bring Grace ashore.  The rest as they say, is history.  But more importantly, does anyone have a poodle I can borrow?

I took a cross the ocean cruise about 5 years ago. I went via ship due to the fact that I have DVT and I can not fly. It was a marvelous trip. I took the Princess line over and then back we returned via the QMII. The Cunard line is just breathtaking. The Princess line is wonderful as well.

If only travel were that elegant....You'll be more likely to see lots of sequins and inappropriate swimwear! :)

Oh gosh, I honestly believe that Grace Kelly is one of the greatest style icons to ever have existed!

Have a great time on your cruise!

She was so lovely. It's just sad that her son has turned Monaco into Eurotrash central. Their royal family isn't what she made it anymore.

I just learned this morning that it's customary for royals who marry to take a cruise [Kate & William story]

I was wondering why that is? privacy? not sure but how fitting your story is today.

Grace was laughing and having so much fun! and the dogs added to it! there was a poodle (I have had them all my life) and I believe an Weimerauner also!

anyway.....she had so much fun.....and that is in short supply these days!

thanks for the FUN on your wonderful Blog!

And you have FUN on your cruise! Never forget the importance of FUN every single day of your life!!!

Hi Heather, I have the poodle and I'll lend him to you. He is a "blue" like Grace's guy--but a lot bigger. Grace was always exquisite an a perfect role model for little girls in the fifties. Let me know when you want to borrow Jones. Mary

Grace sure epitomizes what we all know, that less really is more and that nothing can beat understated elegance.
The cruise ship looks OUTRAGEOUS! Wow you are in for a treat, the decor is just breathtaking (and this from a non cruiser but must admit its peaked my interest)
Bon voyage.....

Looking at those pictures, Grace could rock some sunglasses. I always love how beautifully turned out in the hats and scarves. One of my style icons!!

Thanks for all the lovely comments! As someone who is a non-cruiser, I am excited to chronicle my experience for other non-cruisers. And more importantly, I'm excited to get away from the snow! I am counting down the days until February 5th!

Can you imagine how Grace must have been feeling during her journey across the ocean? On her way to marry a Prince and become a Princess herself. It must have been the longest eight days of her life...

Ah - the era of no tattoos or piercings. I think I missed the boat - the elegance of that era inspire.

You can borrow my Maltese, Coco! She really does look quite posh with her white hair and bows in any color you fancy. ;-)

I have always loved Grace Kelly, my only daughter is named Grace. I think the former made the name more special for me because she's so fabulous!

I could watch "To Catch a Thief" a hundred times just for the fashion. Grace Kelly always looked amazing.

I have never been on a cruise. But my dream is to do it like in the olden days, to arrive with a big steamer trunk full of outfits for all occasions, to get dressed up exquisitely every night for dinner and attend a few balls and such.......

What happened to elegant travel?

Cheers,

Claudia
