All of the photos of Reese Witherspoon from Water for Elephants have been reminding me of Jackie Kennedy. In March 1962, Jackie and her sister Lee Radziwill traveled to India and Pakistan on what was billed as a "goodwill tour." They too rode elephants and even a camel but it was very carefully planned outfits designed by Oleg Cassini that stole the spotlight. Jackie chose colors that were perfect for each country she visited and pastels made up most of her dresses for this trip including pink. As Diana Vreeland once famously said, "pink is the navy blue of India."

Lovely to see all these photos again. Nicolex
Those were the days when ladies wore stockings and gloves. And dresses to ride elephants... Jackie's clothes were the essence of beauty in simplicity--the beautiful fabrics and perfect fit. Thanks for reminding me.
Thanks for this post! Jackie will forever be my style icon. These pics are great reminder that dresses can still be flattering, sexy even, and have a hem line just grazing the bottom of the knee.
She was indeed a remarkable woman.....and so stylish.
She truly was a style icon with class and grace. Love every outfit....and the embellished handbag.
Thanks for sharing....I really enjoy your blog, but don't always have time to comment.
Just fabulous...
Years ago, at the Met's famous Jackie exhibit, I saw many of the dresses you show above. They were still vibrant and of course impeccably stylish--a real feat in that kind of heat. But of course, that's why she's a style icon.
Someone should recreate the blue/green dress (and necklace) in the last photo. I could easily see that today and it wouldn't look the least bit dated (minus the gloves and handbag, of course).
I too was struck by the timelessness of her clothing when I visited the Met show and you really see it in these photos--especially in the way that she wore them. I know it is hardly unique to say, but how I wish that we still embraced the concept of grace and manners in our everyday lives...
